Short biography
Victoria (V. E.) Schwab (born July 7, 1987) is an American fantasy author best known for her 2013 novel Vicious, the Shades of Magic series, and for her children's and young adult fiction published under the name Victoria Schwab.

The Guardian called Vicious "a brilliant exploration of the superhero mythos and a riveting revenge thriller". It received a starred review from Publishers Weekly, which also named the novel one of its best books of 2013 for SF/Fantasy/Horror. The American Library Association's Reference and User Services Association likewise awarded it the top fantasy book in their 2014 Reading List. In late 2013 the rights for a film adaptation of Vicious were bought jointly by Story Mining & Supply Co and Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions.

In 2014 Schwab signed a two-book deal with Tor Books. Her next novel, A Darker Shade of Magic, was published in February 2015 and also received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. "Vicious" and the Shades of Magic series are published by Tor Books. In 2017, she signed another book deal with Tor for the sequel to Vicious, Vengeful; a new trilogy set called “Threads of Power” in the same world as the Shades of Magic series; and a Blade-Runner inspired book called "Black Tabs."

In May 2018, Schwab gave the sixth annual Tolkien Lecture at Pembroke College, Oxford.

This was a very enjoyable read. Well written. Great characters. A fascinating world. Start to finish had my attention and kept me engaged. So happy to see it's part of a series ... time to pick up book 2.

Seven years after the defeat of Osaron, Rhy Maresh's kingdom is under threat from enemies old and new. Alucard is still the lead man in his life (both personally and professionally) but has failed to identify any members of "The Hand", an underground group determined to overthrow the king. Lila and Kell return from covert seafaring missions to assist. While revisiting beloved characters from the Darker Shade of Magic series is satisfying, the real gem of the story is a Tes. The new character is a scrappy tinkerer who cannot wield magic but can see it and, most importantly, repair it. Meanwhile, in Gray London, the child queen is seven years older and determined to restore magic to her nearly magic-less land. The extensive flashbacks are confusing and could have been integrated more efficiently. Schwab's lavish descriptive style would be irritating if not for the skill in using it.… (more)

I started this as an audiobook and while I liked the narrators voice, I quickly became bored. I was tuning out too much. I'm glad I picked this one up on my Kindle and began physically reading it. Much was lost in the audio. Schwab did a great job at a slow building suspense and a gothic feel. I also really loved some of the concepts she threw in, mirror worlds, a mute main character, and more.
