White Guard is Russian author Mikhail Bulgakov's semi-autobiographical first novel and tells the story of the Turbin family – Alexei, Elena and Nikolka – in Kiev in 1918. Set against the backdrop of the civil war that erupted in the Ukraine after the Russian Revolution, White Guard brilliantly examines the the existential crises brought about by the loss of moral and political certainties. Leading translator Marian Schwartz will be at BookPeople tonight at 7PM to talk about her work on the first complete and accurate translation of the original text. (EKAnderson)
