From the Kimbundu word kilombo, a quilombo is a mountain stronghold of maroons – people who escaped from slavery and the colonial plantation system, to build a new world in resistance and defiance to the dominant world order. Primarily built and organized by Africans, quilombos also included indigenous peoples, poor whites and others who didn't want to eat or be a piece in the colonial capitalist pie. These rebel communities survived for centuries throughout the whole western hemisphere!
Here we resurrect the tradition of the quilombo with a celebration of 21st century maroons from prison and patriarchy!
