We are admittedly going to be a bit biased about this author as she is both an alumni to UCSC and Bookshop Santa Cruz. (Yes, people we not only sell books, and give great recommendations, we also birth the authors you want to read). But this book, the first in a trilogy designed for cross over readers of young adult and adult fiction, is already getting acclaim from a variety of reviewers. Touted as a book version of "My So-Called Life" mixed in with a more heartfelt “Sex-in-the City,” Beautiful Americans is the story of four American teens in Paris and the scandals that haunt each of them. Silag introduces us to Alex, the rich New York girl; Cali-born dancer Olivia; closeted Memphis boy Zack; and finally PJ, an elusive beauty from Vermont who is hiding a dark past. Studying abroad for their junior year of high school, they form a bond and run wild in the Tuileries, hold clandestine parties in their host familiesa luxe apartments, take over tiny crowded cafes and generally live the glamorous life. But when the unthinkable happens, the glamour comes to a grinding halt and they must each face the lies they’ve told while reinventing themselves and come to terms with the secrets they have held well-kept. This is a page-turning book that will instantly leave you asking for more. And we couldn’t be more proud! Please help us welcome Ms. Lucy Silag for the reading and signing of this incredible debut novel! (booksense)
