Stuart Sim's first degree, as a mature student, was in English and Philosophy, 1975-8, and then a Ph.D on Bunyan and Defoe, graduating in 1983. From 1982-92 He was Staff Tutor in Arts in the Open University, North-West Region, after which he joined the University of Sunderland, becoming Team Leader in English and then Professor of Critical Theory in 1994. In 2008 Sim retired from Sunderland. He is the author, or editor, of 25 books, and has also written numerous journal articles and book chapters. His work has been translated into 17 languages, and has appeared at several book festivals (Hay and Edinburgh, for example) in recent years. Sim was elected a Fellow of the English Association in 2002.
