This is a reprint that was issued in 1872 as a ext book in schools and colleges
This is the attempt by Stephens, former vice president of the Confederacy, to justify succession on constitutional grounds. It rehashes many of the same arguments made before the war, but avoids slavery. The reason I bought the book is that it also includes nice engravings of Daniel Webster, Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, Thomas Jefferson and George Washington.
