A Croft in the Hills by Katharine Stewart
An eye-opening depiction of life on a highland croft fifty years ago. The joy that the Stewart's find in self sufficiency is balanced by the hardships of winter and the immense struggle to make ends meet. An enjoyable and thought-provoking read.
An absolutely lovely book. Beautifully evocative descriptions of Highland life and a wealth of interesting plant-lore. Katharine Stewart's prose is a pleasure to read and her love for the natural world is evident throughout. Highly recommended for anyone with a passion for gardening or the Highlands.

A couple and their young daughter, fresh from city life, immerse themselves in the practicalities of looking after sheep, cattle, and hens, mending fences, baking bread, and surviving the worst that Scottish winters can throw at them. Katherine Stewart lived on a croft at Abriachan, near Loch Ness, for many years. This book is the first in a series, which includes A Garden in the Hills, A School in the Hills and The Post in the Hills. She has since helped to set up a crofting museum in Abriachan.
