On Wednesday, January 25 at 7:00PM, the Friends of the Beatley Library are pleased to be hosting Brooke C. Stoddard, well known journalist and writer (and former member of the Alexandria Library Board) to discuss his book The World in Balance: The Perilous Months of June -- October 1940. The book was published in 2010 to very favorable reviews. In mid-1940, the British Expeditionary Force desperately attempted to flee the small French port of Dunkirk and reach British shores. France was failing and it was known that Germany had already conquered Poland, Denmark, Moray, Holland and Belgium. Churchill proclaimed to the House of Commons, "Hitler will have to break this island or lose the war." For the following five months, Britain waged a heroic and clandestine struggle with Nazi German -- one both psychological and diplomatic -- over the fate of the world. The World in Balance recounts these events. Mr. Stoddard has written/edited for Time-Life Books, the National Geographic Society, the Washington Post, Government Computer News and many other trade magazines and periodicals. He is our neighbor -- a long-time resident of Alexandria and a member of the city's Chamber of Commerce. Please join us. Light refreshments will be served. (StrangeDomains)
