Prof. Stone is best known for his social histories of marriage and divorce and for his works on the English Civil War and the English aristocracy. After moving to the U.S. in 1960, he became a member of the Institute of Advanced Study at Princeton, where he was also professor and then head of the history department. He was a founding director of the Shelby Cullom Davis Centre for Historical Studies.
