Barry Strayer was a key player in the design of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, having worked with Pierre Trudeau in the Department of Justice, and in the Privy Council Office. In this book, he describes the process of developing and negotiating the Charter, and of patriation generally. His insider's view is very interesting and provides a deeper understanding of how our federation works.

He also talks about Pierre Trudeau's political philosophy and how it shaped the process. This was, to me, a little less interesting as it didn't relate the author's personal experiences -- because it is his perspective that is what really brings this book to life.

Finally, he provides some examples of how the charter has changed our society. I especially liked the stories involving his own decisions as a judge on charter-related cases.

If you like Canadian politics and history, you will enjoy this inisde look at it.
