Ross Szabo on Preventing Youth Suicide

Ross Szabo , Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of Your Mental Health - A Guide for Young Adults.
When Ross Szabo was 16, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. By the time he was a high school senior he was suicidal and suffering from anger management issues. He drank to excess. During the beginning of his freshman year at American University, he was rushed to the hospital to have alcohol pumped from his stomach and forced to take a medical leave of absence. As he wrestled with his own mental illness, he was confronted with negative stereotypes. Szabo returned to American University and graduated Cum Laude in 2002. Today, he is the Director of Youth Outreach for NMHAC and lectures throughout the country. Campus Activities Magazine recognized him as one of the top speakers on the college circuit. Szabo is the author of Behind Happy Faces: What Young Adults Need to Know About Mental Health. Szabo is the keynote speaker for Suicide Prevention Week, hosted by Counseling and Mental Health Services. (booksense)… (more)
