Anna Maria Tilschová was born into a wealthy family in Prague, Czechoslovakia, where she lived nearly all her life. She married her cousin Emanuela Tilsche, a law professor, and through him met many artists and writers. She wrote several books before Fany (1915) and Stará rodina (An Old Family, 1916) brought her recognition. Her novel Haldy (Heaps, 1927), gave a sympathetic portrayal of mine workers. Today her work is considered a milestone in the development of the realistic novel in her native country.
