Short biography
Lady Susan Townley, née Keppel, was a daughter of William Keppel, 7th Earl of Albemarle and his wife Sophia Mary MacNab. Her family had served the British crown since the days of King William of Orange, and she was widely travelled. In 1896, she married Walter Beaupré Townley, a British diplomat who was later knighted, and accompanied him on his postings as minister to Portugal, Germany, Italy, China, the Ottoman Empire, Argentina, Persia, Belgium, and The Netherlands. In 1904, she published My Chinese Notebook, recalling a bygone era dominated by the Dowager Empress, and another volume of memoirs called 'Indiscretions' of Lady Susan in 1922. The Lady Susan Townley Prize for the best polo horse played in the prestigious Argentine Open Polo Championship was created by Sir Walter in her honor.
