Charles William Vane, originally known as The Honourable Charles Stewart, was the son of Robert Stewart, 1st Marquess of Londonderry. He succeeded a half-brother to become 3rd Marquess of Londonderry in 1822. During the Napoleonic Wars, he commanded a cavalry brigade in the Peninsular Campaign of 1808-1809, and was made Adjutant General to Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of Wellington). He married as his second wife the wealthy heiress Lady Frances Anne Vane-Tempest, and took the surname of Vane by royal licence.
