Short biography
Metta Fuller Victor was born in Erie, Pennsylvania. When she was a child, the family moved to Wooster, Ohio, where she and her older sister Frances Fuller attended a seminary for young ladies. They both began writing at an early age and published stories in local newspapers. Her first book, Last Days of Tul, A Romance of the Lost Cities of Yucatan, appeared in 1847, when she was 15 years old. With Frances, she co-wrote Poems of Sentiment and Imagination, published in 1850. In 1856, Metta married Orville J. Victor, an Ohio editor and publisher with whom she had nine children. They moved to New York City, where she wrote for The New York Weekly and then for the publisher Beadle & Adams. She served as editor of the B&A monthly publications Home and Cosmopolitan Art Journal. She had a long, successful, and extremely prolific career writing popular fiction, poetry, mysteries, detective novels, romances, humor, and cookbooks, often using the pseudonym "Seeley Regester." Her 1860 book Alice Wilde is considered the first dime novel. Many literary critics credit her as one of the first authors of detective fiction in the USA.
