Marie-Élisabeth-Louise Vigée-Lebrun (1755-1842) was the most famous and gifted female painter of the 18th century. She is best known for her portraits, including lovely self portraits and paintings of Queen Marie Antoinette and her family. She fled the French Revolution but had no trouble finding patrons for her work in Europe, England, and Russia. She returned to France in 1805.
