Short biography
Jacqueline van der Waals was the daughter of the Dutch theoretical physicist Johannes Diderik van der Waals, who received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1910. Having been educated in numerous languages including English, German, Italian, Danish and Norse, she became a history teacher. However, she found this career unrewarding, and left teaching to write poetry, biographical essays and novels, and do social work.
