Caroline Walsh was a daughter of writer Mary Lavin and her husband William Walsh, a lawyer. She married novelist James Ryan, with whom she had two children. She became literary editor of the Irish Times in 1999. She also was the editor of three collections of Irish short stories, and the author of The Homes of Irish Writers (1980). She died suddenly at age 59.
