Herbjørg Wassmo er født i 1942 i Vesterålen. Hun debuterte i 1976 med diktsamlingen Vingeslag, men har først og fremst markert seg som romanforfatter. I 1981 slo hun gjennom med romanen Huset med den blinde glassveranda, første bind i trilogien om Tora. For den siste romanen i trilogien, Hudløs himmel, ble hun også tildelt Nordisk Råds litteraturpris i 1987. De tre bøkene om Dina er Wassmos andre hovedverk, en trilogi som ble påbegynt med Dinas bok i 1989 og avsluttet med Karnas arv i 1997. Med Det sjuende møte forlot Herbjørg Wassmo for en stund det historiske, og gikk inn i samtiden. Dette er muligens tydeligst i hennes forrige roman Et glass melk takk, som grep fatt i den store og vanskelige trafficking-problematikken. Et glass melk takk ble en viktig referanse i regjereingens tiltak mot trafficking. Med Hundre år er Wassmo tilbake i det historiske, i en roman som tar utgangspunkt i livet til hennes egen oldemor, mormor og mor. Herbjørg Wassmo har også skrevet noveller og skuespill. Hennes bøker er oversatt til 24 språk, deriblant engelsk, tysk, fransk, spansk, italiensk, russisk, japansk, hebraisk.
