This event is about cracking open the process of translation and taking a look at its inner workings. Two translators – Shaun Whiteside and Mike Mitchell – go head to head with their versions of a previously untranslated work; with the help of the author and chair, the variations and nuances of the text, in both languages, are brought to light. Novelist Daniel Kehlmann will be providing the challenge, and our chair is Daniel Hahn, interim director of the BCLT and chair of the Translators Association. Shaun Whiteside’s translations from German include works by Bernhard Schlink, Freud, Schnitzler and Musil. Mike Mitchell’s translations include works by Goethe, Adolf Loos, and Oskar Kokoschka. Both translators’ work has won the Schlegel-Tieck Prize for German translation. The art of literary translation is at the heart of World Literature Weekend. This will be marked in the 2011 festival through a programme of workshops led by a team of Britain’s most distinguished literary translators. This half-day workshop led by Shaun Whiteside focuses on the German language and will be structured around close work on texts sent in advance to participants. Discussion will centre on the differences in approach evident in variant translations of the same texts. Participants should have a good working knowledge of the language and will be invited to prepare their own translations of the texts under discussion. Shaun Whiteside has translated over fifty books from German, French, Italian and Dutch, including novels by Amélie Nothomb, Luther Blissett, Wu Ming and Marcel Möring. His translations of Freud, Musil, Schnitzler and Nietzsche are published by Penguin Classics, and his translation of Magdalena the Sinner by Lilian Faschinger won the 1996 Schlegel-Tieck Translation Prize . His most recent translation from German is The Weekend by Bernhard Schlink, and he is currently working on novels by Zoran Drvenkar, Pascal Mercier and Susann Pásztor. A former chair of the Translators Association, he sits on the editorial board of New Books in German and the Advisory Panel of the British Centre for Literary Translation, where he regularly teaches at the summer school.
