In one case, Whitington opines that Black Jack McEwan's retirement was imminent and would likely be replaced as Country Party leader by Charles Barnes. In the end, Barnes retired first and McEwan stayed Country Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister long enough to become Prime Minister following the death of Harold Holt.
Obviously Whitington can't be blamed for his inability to read McEwan's mind though and "The rulers" is a very good snapshot of Australian politics in the early 1960s.… (more)
