Eh…it was interesting, and maybe I’d have liked it better if I read the first one, but the majority of the characters were so unlikeable it definitely hurt the book. There was also a lot going on, but at the same time it was pretty predictable in most areas, so that was another negative. I’d give the series another try, but I’m not going to actively seek it out.

A complex plot involving Russian gangsters, compromised judges and business people, Moroccan terrorists and a variety of other criminals. Javier Falcon, the head of homicide investigations in Seville, is in the center of it all. His girlfriend’s son is kidnapped while Falcon is investigating a recent bombing and also Russian corruption and he’s not sure who has the child.

The plot features characters from past novels and some new ones. The complexity of the various connections and the large number of characters make it difficult to follow at times.… (more)

I was looking for a police procedural set in Portugal to read on the plane from LA to Lisbon and I found this on a BBC list of Mysteries set around the world. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but the narrative was split about 70/30 between Nazi's in WWII and late 1990's Lisbon. I enjoyed the characters latter setting a lot more. As with a book like Jo Nesbo's The Redbreast, I felt like I learned a lot about the history of the country though WWII but that part of the story could have been told a little more compactly.

The cover is very conspicuous.

Pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this novel, especially the first 2/3's or so. The mix of artist sensibilities and detective work gave the novel a fascinating depth, and the writing is excellent. The author continued to add characters and connections throughout the book until at the end he was forced to finally give it up- I was by then almost tired! But it was well worth the effort and I look forward to reading more of him.
