Captain Mervyn Robert George Wingfield was a Royal Navy officer who served in submarines throughout World War II. He survived the sinking of his boat after a collision in the North Sea, and became the first British sub commander to sink a Japanese sub. He served as naval attaché in Athens and Tel Aviv during the Suez crisis of 1956. After three years as director of Underwater Weapons at the Admiralty, his final command was the Royal Naval Air Station at Abbotsinch, Scotland. He retired in 1963 and wrote his memoirs, published as Wingfield at War (2012).
