Franz Xaver Winterhalter, known as the "Painter of Princes," was the preeminent court painter of mid-19th century Europe. Under his brush, every subject became an elegant beauty. Among his best known works are "Empress Eugénie Surrounded by her Ladies in Waiting (1855)" and the many portraits he made of Queen Victoria and her growing family. He also created memorable portraits of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
