OK novel about Mormon Battalion (members who volunteered for Mexican War and marched to Calif. in 1846).

Enjoyable collection of four stories about a fat, beer-drinking, quick-shooting horse track detective. There is a bit of sameness to the first three, set in the West, but the action moves to New York City for the last story, and it may be the best of the bunch. Wormser's writing is easy to digest and this is a pleasant way to consume a couple of hours.

Cop is hired to drive a troubled 16-year old (who is also a walking encyclopedia) from California to a booby hatch in Kansas, accompanied by the boy's nurse, an attractive 26 year old psychology student. But someone may be following them. This is a nice road story that keeps the reader fully engaged until the end. Wormser was recommended (somewhere, I forget) as a pulp writer worth reading, and this book supports that recommendation. This one will take you right back to 1961 when it was published. It will make you ache for never having had the opportunity to drive down old Route 66, eat at diners, and stay at one-of-a-kind motels.… (more)

Love this pulp/detective fiction stuff, and Richard Wormser was pretty good at it.
