We are celebrating our tenth Community Book Group—a monthly Book Group, open to everyone in the community and centered on works by local authors. Bookshop’s next community selection is with Santa Cruz resident and UCSC Literature Professor, Karen Yamashita, for her book, Tropic of Orange. Irreverently juggling magical realism, film noir, hip hop, and chicanismo, Karen Yamashita presents an L.A. where the homeless, gangsters, infant organ entrepreneurs, and Hollywood collide on a stretch of highway struck by disaster. The Harbor Freeway crisis becomes the apex of events - caused by an orange, which has been brought to L.A. from just north of Mazatlan, dragging with it the Tropic of Cancer. Tropic of Orange is a poignant apocalyptic tale of race, class, and culture, with characters that you won’t forget. The meeting will feature a discussion at 7:30pm facilitated by Julie Minnis, followed by a dialogue with both authors at 8:00 pm. Tropic of Orange will be discounted to the whole community at 10% off its cover price from April 23rd until the May 21st meeting date. We hope you’ll join us. PS—There will be snacks and tea!!
