Marya Zaturenska was born in Kiev in the present-day Ukraine and emigrated with her family to the USA as a child. An outstanding student at night school despite having to work in a factory by day, she won a college scholarship to Valparaiso University in Indiana and later transferred to the University of Wisconsin at Madison. In 1925, she married Horace Gregory, a poet and literary critic. Zaturenska was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1938 for her collection of lyric verse entitled Cold Morning Sky. With her husband, she co-authored A History of American Poetry, 1900–1940 (1946). Zaturenska also wrote a highly acclaimed biography of the English poet Christina Rossetti.
