Character description

Aethelflaed (born c. 870, died 918), known as Lady of the Mercians, was the eldest daughter of the Saxon king Alfred the Great and his wife Ealhswith. She was married to Aethelred, Lord of the Mercians. After his death in 911, she ruled the kingdom on her own, and is said to have been a formidable military leader and strategist. In the Saxon Chronicle novels, she is first the protégé and later the lover of Uhtred of Bebbanburg.
