Harriet Jacobs: A Life by Jean Fagan Yellin

Character description

Reverend Albert Gladwin was sent by the American Baptist Free Mission Society of New York, along with Julia Wilbur, a Quaker school teacher, to assist African American refugees from the south during the Civil War, where Harriet Jacobs was already working. Wilbur and Jacobs were soon complaining about Gladwin's abusive behavior toward the refugees, his imposition of rents on the previously free, and rather rudimentary housing, and his demand for extensive quarters for himself. They eventually got him dismissed.
