People/Characters: Blanche, duchess of Lancaster

Blanche of Lancaster (1345–1369) was an aristocrat and great heiress who married her cousin John of Gaunt, son of King Edward III, bringing him many rich estates and titles as her dowry. On her early death from the plague, Geoffrey Chaucer, then an unknown writer, was commissioned to write The Book of the Duchess in her memory.
