Character description

Dorothea Schlegel (1764-1839), born Brendel Mendelssohn, was a daughter of Moses Mendelssohn. She became a noted translator and salon hostess who knew and corresponded with many of the leading writers, artists, and philosophers of her era. She scandalously left her first husband for poet and literary critic Friedrich von Schlegel and married him after converting to Christianity.
