Character description

Marie-Anne de Mailly-Nesle (1717-1744) was the youngest of 5 aristocratic sisters, 4 of whom in turn became mistresses of King XV of France. She was first known at court as Madame de La Tournelle; in 1743, the king created her duchesse de Châteauroux. Nancy Mitford wrote that she was rapacious, implacable, and very ambitious. She collapsed suddenly and died, perhaps of peritonitis.
