Edwin McMasters Stanton, 25th Attorney General of the USA (20 December 1860 - 4 March 1861, under James Buchanan and Abraham Lincoln) and 27th Secretary of War of the USA (20 January 1862 - 28 May 1868, under Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson). Johnson's attempt to sack Stanton led to the Senate's attempt to impeach Johnson.
