Character description

Eleanor Cobham (c. 1400-c. 1452) married Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, son of King Henry IV of England. She had been a lady-in-waiting to his first wife. In 1441, she was implicated in a conspiracy to use witchcraft to kill the young Henry VI, her husband's nephew (Humphrey was at that time heir to the throne). She was made to perform public penance in London, divorced, and imprisoned for life.
