Character description

Née Challoner. Born into an old Saxon family, she was a favorite Maid of Elizabeth I. The death of her uncle was ruled a misadventure, but Frances was not satisfied, and so Elizabeth I sent Joan and Matthew Stock to investigate disguised as the new steward and housekeeper of Thorncombe, the Challoner's seat.

At the same time, Frances is about to marry Thomas Cooke.
