Character description

Hortense Mancini, duchesse Mazarin (1646–1699), was one of the famous nieces of Cardinal Mazarin, chief minister of France. They were known at the French court as the "Mazarinettes." He arranged her 1661 marriage to Armand Charles de La Porte de La Meilleraye and gave them the titles duc and duchesse Mazarin. Hortense later ran away from her husband and found her way to England, where she became King Charles II's official mistress in 1676 and made mischief at his court.
