Character description

Isaac Chauncey (1772-1840): American naval officer. He joined the American navy as an officer soon after it was reconstituted in the late 1790s, fighting under Thomas Truxton in the Quasi-War with France. In the War of 1812, he was placed in command of the navy on the Great Lakes. He spent most of his time on Lake Ontario, leaving Lake Erie to Oliver Hazard Perry, and spent most of the war not engaging the British.
