Character description

James Francis Edward Stuart, Prince of Wales (1688-1766), known as "The Old Pretender" was the son of King James II of England. His birth as the long-awaited male heir was the subject of intense controversy. Before long, his father had been overthrown and forced into exile in France. In 1715, Prince James led an unsuccessful attempt to recapture the British throne. He spent the remainder of his life in Rome and his followers, known as Jacobites, pinned their hopes on his son Charles Edward, "Bonnie Prince Charlie."
