Character description

Joan Beaufort (c. 1379–1440) was the only daughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, and his mistress, Katherine Swynford. Her parents eventually married and Joan and her brothers were legitimated. Soon afterwards, in 1397, Joan married Ralph Neville, Earl of Westmorland, and had 14 children with him. In her widowhood, the Countess of Westmorland was a powerful landowner in the North of England.
