Character description

John Morrissey: Boxer, Irish immigrant, and politician. Born in Ireland in 1831, he came to New York as a boy and then migrated to California. He became famous as a boxer in 1852, and spent half a dozen years in the ring before beating champion John C. Heenan and retiring. He opened a gambling resort in Saratoga Springs, worked with Tammany Hall, and served two terms in congress, dying in 1878.
