Mabel Tolkien (1870-1904): Born Mabel Suffield, in 1891 she married Arthur Tolkien, who was thirteen years her senior. Their children, born in South Africa, were J. R. R. and Hilary Tolkien. They soon returned to England without Arthur. After her husband died (1896), she converted to Catholicism, meaning that she was forced to raise her children with little help from their families. She died in 1904 of diabetes, with the boys still young; she left them in the care of Father Francis Xavier Morgan.
