Character description

Marie-Jeanne or Manon Roland (1754-1793) is best known simply as Madame Roland. She was a prominent Parisian salonnière and political writer. Together with her husband Jean-Marie Roland de la Platiere, she was a supporter of the French Revolution and an influential member of the Girondist faction. She was executed on the guillotine during the Reign of Terror. Her famous final words were, "O Liberté, que de crimes on commet en ton nom!" (Oh Liberty, what crimes are committed in thy name!)
