The Neandertals: Of Skeletons, Scientists, and Scandal by Erik Trinkaus

Character description

Marcel de Puydt was a lawyer and amateur archeologist.  Working with Maximin Lohest, a geologist from the University of Liège excavating in the cave Spy d'Orneau, Belgium, in July 1886 they discovered two nearly complete Neandertal skeletons, a man and a woman, with numerous Mousterian artifacts.  Feeling that they lacked some of the needed expertise, Lohest invited Julien Fraipont, and anatomist at University of Liège to work with him in describing the skeletons.
