Character description

Maria Nikolaevna, Duchess of Leuchtenberg (1819–1876) was born a Grand Duchess of Russia as daughter of Tsar Nicholas I and Empress Alexandra (Princess Charlotte of Prussia). In 1839, she married Maximilian, Duke of Leuchtenberg, a grandson of Josephine de Beauharnais. The tsar agreed to this unconventional marriage on the condition that the couple live in Russia. He built the Mariinsky Palace in St. Petersburg for them. Marie became an art collector and President of the Imperial Academy of Arts.
