Character description

Grand Duchess Marie Pavlovna (1890-1958) was a granddaughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia and the daughter of Grand Duke Paul. Tsar Nicholas II was her first cousin. Her mother died after giving birth to Marie's younger brother, Dmitri, who grew up to become one of the murderers of Rasputin. Marie had a lonely childhood raised by her stern uncle Grand Duke Serge, the military governor of Moscow. She made an arranged marriage to a Swedish prince, but the union was unhappy and ended quickly. Marie worked as a nurse in World War I and escaped from Russia during the Revolution. She later became a successful entrepreneur in the Parisian fashion industry and wrote her memoirs.
