Character description

Marie of France, Countess of Champagne (1145-1198) was the daughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine by her first husband King Louis VII of France. Marie was married to Henri I, Count of Champagne. She was involved in the crusade against the Abigensians, but is probably best remembered now for her sponsorship of Chrétien de Troyes, the great author of medieval romances. Her daughter, known as Marie de Champagne, became empress of Constantinople.
