Character description

Marie-Louise Victoire de Donnissan, marquise de La Rochejacquelein (1772-1857), accompanied her first husband during his service in the "Vendée," the civil war between royalists and republicans in the west of France during the French Revolution. She witnessed atrocities committed by both sides. Her memoir, first published in 1815, remains one of the most authentic records of these major events.
