Character description

1) Mary Sullivan became the first female homicide detective for the New York City police in 1918. She had entered the force in 1911 as a matron after the death of her husband. In 1926, she became the head of the Policewomen's Bureau. Her family included numerous police officers. Her daughter, Grace Marie Legay, became a house detective at the Commodore Hotel in New York City. Mary Sullivan tried to keep her career separate from her family and friends; her 1938 memoir was entitled My Double Life. Her career inspired a radio series beginning in 1947, Policewoman, which dramatized cases from her career. Each episode ended with a postscript delivered by her. She was not fond of fictional detective stories which she found very unrealistic. [from Erika Janik's Pistols and Petticoats (Beacon Press, 2016)

2.) Mary Sullivan (d. January 4, 1964, aged 19) was the last of the victims of the so-called Boston Strangler. It is questioned whether all of the suspected victims were in fact tied to Albert DeSalvo, who confessed to being the strangler, but DNA tests of seminal fluid left at the scene and the exhumed body of DeSalvo, linked him to Mary Sullivan.
