Character description

Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861): American soldier. A West Point graduate in 1841, he had had extensive military experience when the Civil War began, but was still only a captain. At the start of the Civil War, he worked hard to keep Saint Louis in Union hands, and was made a Brigadier General in May 1861 as a result. His forces brought more of Missouri into Union hands, but he was killed in August at the Battle of Wilson's Creek.
