Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Character description

Phillip Pirrip, known as Pip: TItle character in Dickens's Great Expectations. Orphaned at a young age, he is raised "by hand" by his older sister and her husband Joe Gargery. As a young man, he finds himself possessed of "great expectations" (of wealth) while being summoned to be the companion of the long-since-jilted recluse Miss Havisham and her adopted daughter Estella. In love with Estella, he expects believes the wealthy Miss Havisham to be responsible for his expectations, and hopes to marry Estella. But in fact Miss Havisham has nothing to do with the expectations; in the end, Estella makes a dreadful marriage to another man, Pip loses his expectations, and all ends... ambiguously....
